Cold Heading

Cold heading applies a form or shape to end or along the diameter of the wire part, perpendicular to its axis. Common cold heads are hex heads, carriage heads on bolts, stop-collars and diameter reductions.

Heading is only limited by the "plastic formability" of the steel. There are restrictions in material ductility and flow characteristics that prevent forms from being accomplished in the cold, solid state. Most head shapes require customized tooling.
